Literacy & Justice For All

I believe literacy in America is a social justice issue. My goal is to bring awareness to these issues and bridge the gap between awareness and action.

Equity & Social Justice In Our Schools

My next mission is to bring the Science of Reading into conversations on Equity & Social Justice in our schools.

How I’m Helping

In 2021, I was able to send over 20 teachers to training through the Reading Teacher’s Top 10 Tools. This training helps teachers and educators learn more about The Science of Reading.

At the end of 2021, I sent 15 teachers to training through Really Great Reading which gives them self-paced training and materials to get started using science-based practices in their classrooms.

As funds are available, I plan to help many more teachers in 2022!

I also host weekly giveaways in my Instagram stories. My goal is to get resources aligned with the science of reading into teacher’s hands.

Raising Awareness

100% of the proceeds from this design will benefit the documentary called “The Truth About Reading”.

Raising awareness to the literacy crisis is the first step toward change!

What is the Science of Reading?

The Science of Reading is a vast, interdisciplinary body of scientifically-based research about reading and issues related to reading and writing.

This research has been conducted over the last five decades across the world, and it is derived from thousands of studies conducted in multiple languages. The science of reading has culminated in a preponderance of evidence to inform how proficient reading and writing develop; why some have difficulty; and how we can most effectively assess and teach and, therefore, improve student outcomes through prevention of and intervention for reading difficulties.

What People Are Saying

As a preservice teacher, I have learned so much more about literacy and the science of reading than I have in my credential program. I’m relieved to know that even my very first students will get the teacher version of me that is knowledgeable about how to truly get them to read thanks to you! What a gift to the kids.”

Monica V.

“I used to teach that sight words were words you just had to know by “sight”.  I always felt there had to be a better way for kids to make connections to make them remember.  Heidi has helped me understand differently, equipping me with the latest research on orthographic mapping, I feel excited to help my students make the connections that will last.”

Christy T.

Heidi has helped me get the train rolling with SOR. It can be so overwhelming learning all there is to know, but Heidi’s videos have been so incredibly helpful and explain things in a way any educator learning SOR can understand.”

Olivia H.

“I fell into the TikTok craze while home on Covid quarantine , and from “Teacher TikTok” found Heidi. Her posts on SOR led me down a rabbit hole, and now I am SOR obsessed. It has truly changed my teaching and I am seeing growth like never before. Her posts continue to inspire me and provide me with more info, ideas, and research! Thank you so much for all you share.”
